Houston's heavy clay soil and intense rainfall events make drainage one of the most important — and most frequently neglected — aspects of landscape design. Standing water damages foundations, kills plants, creates mosquito habitat, and signals water flowing where it shouldn't. At Heaven on Earth Landscaping, drainage is a foundational part of every project we design — not an afterthought.
Why Houston Properties Struggle with Drainage
Several factors combine to make drainage a perennial issue for Houston homeowners:
- Clay soil — Expansive, slow-draining clay retains water on the surface and expands dramatically when wet.
- Flat terrain — Much of the Houston area is very flat, leaving limited natural grade to move water away from structures.
- Rainfall intensity — Houston receives significant rainfall that frequently exceeds the absorptive capacity of clay soils.
- Impervious surfaces — Driveways, patios, and rooflines shed water that must go somewhere.
French Drain Systems
A French drain is the workhorse of residential drainage. A perforated pipe is buried in a gravel-filled trench, typically 18–36 inches deep, pitched to move water away from problem areas toward a street, storm sewer, or collection point. Properly installed French drains solve the vast majority of residential drainage problems — and we have installed hundreds of them throughout the Houston area.
"A French drain installed incorrectly — wrong pitch, insufficient depth, inadequate outlet — can make drainage worse. We design systems based on actual site grading surveys and calculated flow volumes."
Channel and Surface Drainage
For areas where subsurface drainage isn't sufficient, we install channel drains (linear grates) to capture surface water at low points and route it safely away. These are particularly effective at the base of driveways, along patio edges, and in swales that collect water from multiple directions.
Grading and Re-Grading
Sometimes the most effective drainage solution is re-grading — reshaping the ground itself to direct water away from foundations and toward appropriate drainage paths. Positive grade (ground sloping away from the house) is the first line of defense against foundation moisture. We assess and correct grading as part of comprehensive drainage projects.
Dry Creek Beds
A dry creek bed is a beautiful functional drainage solution that moves water through your yard during rain events while providing a natural, decorative landscape feature when it's dry. River rock, boulders, and native plantings create a convincing naturalistic look that many homeowners prefer over purely functional drainage infrastructure.
Permeable Paving Solutions
Permeable pavers, gravel driveways, and decomposed granite surfaces allow water to infiltrate rather than run off. These are increasingly popular solutions that reduce runoff, recharge groundwater, and eliminate the puddles that form on conventional impervious surfaces.
